Mānuka honey comes from bees that feed on the Mānuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand. It contains methylglyoxal (MGO) — a naturally occurring compound found in far higher concentrations than in ordinary honey. The Mānuka plant flowers for only 2–6 weeks per year, making genuine Mānuka honey rare, seasonal, and traceable by harvest batch.
Both measure the strength of Mānuka honey, but differently. MGO measures a single compound — methylglyoxal. UMF measures four markers: MGO, DHA, Leptosperin (authenticity), and HMF (freshness), making it the more comprehensive system. As a guide: UMF 10+ ≈ MGO 263+, UMF 15+ ≈ MGO 514+, UMF 20+ ≈ MGO 829+.
MGO 263+ / UMF 10+ is ideal for everyday wellness and first-time users. MGO 514+ / UMF 15+ suits those wanting stronger daily support. MGO 829+ / UMF 20+ is our highest grade for those seeking the most potent option available. If you're new to Mānuka honey, UMF 10+ is the natural starting point.
Take 1–2 teaspoons daily, ideally in the morning on an empty stomach — directly from the spoon, or stirred into warm water below 40°C. High heat reduces active compounds. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; no refrigeration needed. Properly stored, Mānuka honey has an indefinite shelf life.
