Both measure the strength of Mānuka honey, but differently. MGO measures a single compound — methylglyoxal. Mānuka honey comes from bees that feed on the Mānuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand. It contains methylglyoxal (MGO) — a naturally occurring compound found in far higher concentrations than in ordinary honey. The Mānuka plant flowers for only 2–6 weeks per year, making genuine Mānuka honey rare, seasonal, and traceable by harvest batch.
